Why businesses acquire exact-match domains

Authority, memorability, positioning and scarcity are the four reasons established organisations acquire category domains.

Exact Domains · 9 August 2026

Organisations rarely acquire a category domain for a single reason. In practice, four considerations recur.

Authority. A precise address suggests an established position within a sector. It sets an expectation before the site has loaded.

Memorability. Category terms are already held in the mind of the buyer. A domain built from them requires no rehearsal.

Positioning. Ownership of the category term can differentiate an organisation from competitors trading under founder surnames or invented names.

Scarcity. There is one exact version of any term within an extension. Where a competitor acquires it first, the opportunity does not return.
